![]() ![]() But I wish I would have brought my car with me even if parking takes some work. I found that not being able to get out of the city, to the mountains for example or relying on the T to make it to anything where I needed to be there at a specific time (appointments, group workout classes, movie times) greatly reduced the quality of my life here. But public transportation can only get you so far outside of the area (on a good day). Sure, if you're going from your apt to campus you don't need your car. I moved here for graduate school and got rid of my car because of similar feedback you're getting. ![]() I don’t mean to come off harsh, but they really don’t play around here and will ticket you to death. But I wouldn’t really count on it, parking is a mess everywhere around here. Obviously I’m referring to Somerville, maybe Medford is a little more lax. You can always look for an off-street spot to rent, but it will probably be pricy. But parking can be really tight in this area so spots aren’t always guaranteed when you cut out most of your options. There are specific non resident parking areas, mostly on main streets. I had an old roommate who paid over a grand total in tickets because he didn’t register his car in Somerville. There are temp and guest passes, but I don’t think that’s gonna fly for the next 10 months. There’s really no way around getting a resident sticker without your car being registered here, it would be too easy for people who don’t actually live here to get stickers. You’ll have to go in person to get a new license, but I still think that’s your best bet personally. But Somerville parking doesn’t ask for a license. The RMV might make you change your license if you have a mass address on your registration, not exactly sure because I’ve never had a non mass address. If anyone has any idea how to proceed or what to do please comment, thanks!ĮDIT: Honestly, I am so thankful for this Reddit, already twice you guys have given me a lot of great advice, and it takes a weight off my shoulders from doing all the "investigating" myself. school I am going to) and they can give me a decal that shows I am except from registering my car in MA (for now), but then how do I get a parking permit?Īll I am trying to do is park my car on the street (McCollster House so you can see what I am trying to do), and use it only for large groceries and leave it there otherwise. BUT, to get a street parking permit ( Medford Parking Department) I need to have my car's registration tied to a Medford address, which I don't have since I am not a permanent resident yet, and I would need a new driver's license as well (but I don't want to get a new registration or license under the school's address I am currently at). So, I previously asked a question here: (New to Somerville and Boston (tips)?) and got great responses (bought some bike lights and made plans on where to eat the first few weeks)!īut, one of the best responses was on cars, which lead me to how do I even park in Medford?! So, I won't be a permanent resident until next year June since then I will be in an apartment and not student housing. ![]()
